Levi Thomas Sanders and Mary Edmiston
January 16, 1999

Levi Thomas Sanders was Stephen Sanders’ first born. Levi was born in 1838 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. Nothing is known about Levi’s early years. Levi came with the family to Arkansas at the age of 18. Five years later, he enlisted in the Confederate army in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Nov. 5, 1861. He Served as a sergeant in the16th Arkansas Infanty, G Company, Confederate Army in the Civil War. Levi faced capture at Port Hudson, LA on July 9, 1863. After the Civil War, Levi returned to Washington County, Arkansas. On December 29, 1859, Levi married Mary Edmiston in Washington County. The Edmiston surname was a well-known name at that time in Washington County. Reseach will likely prove that Mary is related to Edmiston indivduals that fought in the Battle of Prairie Grove. No dates are known about Mary’s birth or death. There are no known children from this marriage.

Levi's grave is at Prairie Grove Cemetery, Prairie Grove, Arkansas, alongside other family members. The west side of the pinnacle looking grave stone says: "A light from our household is gone, a voice I loved is stilled, A place is vacant in my heart that never can be filled." Enscribed on the south side of the tombstone: "Is he dead he is not dead but sleepeth."
