Floyd Edward Scribner

Floyd's date of birth was January 7, 1899, in Yale, Payne County, Oklahoma. We find this information within census enumerations and upon his death certificate which was provided to me by the Mason Funeral home of Joplin, Missouri.

Our family has few details concerning Floyd's early life. Oral tradition within our family has it that he met Lettie Marie Thomas and married her; having one child, a son named Edward. Floyd was sentenced to prison and Edward Lee was born shortly thereafter. I speculate that Floyd's incarceration may have been the cause of Lettie's request for a divorce. The details concerning Floyd's prison sentence and his divorce remain unknown to us at this time, requiring further research. If there is anyone who may direct us to that information, I would appreciate them contacting me.

Floyd married Beulah Lois Davis on May 28, 1930, in Cassville, Barry County, Missouri. She was the only child of Elmer Thompson Davis and Mattie Malvina Howard.

Those times were not easy and neither were their lives. Floyd and Beulah had seven children; six sons and one daughter. He and his wife struggled through the post-depression era raising their children in the best way they knew how. Beulah was a fine woman who instilled Christian values in her family, in spite of the difficulties she endured as a result of economic hardship and Floyd's rough demeanor and ill temper.

What I've gathered from listening to family tradition is that Floyd was known for his keen mechanical ability and made his living mostly from farming and doing mechanical work. It seems he was quite ingenious in his ability to repair and fabricate parts for machinery. Floyd had once owned a gas station and machine shop located near Exeter, Missouri. The building, though abandoned and empty, still remains there today. Floyd had also owned and operated a sawmill, cutting and selling timber.

After Floyd's children were grown, with the exception of his one daughter who remained in the home, his wife Beulah filed for and was granted a divorce some time in early 1961.

Shortly thereafter Floyd married a woman named Josie McGarrah. Josie had also been previously married. Our family has few details about his third marriage and it has been my understanding that it was around this period that Floyd had become very ill. Our family believes that it was the onset of his mental illness that greatly contributed to the events and incident that led to Josie's death. Out of respect for remaining living family members, the details concerning her death are being kept private at this time.

According to Floyd's death certificate, he died while confined at the Fulton State Hospital on January 31, 1975, after spending almost 12 years there. He died from emphysema and its related symptoms, perhaps as a result of smoking for many years. May he be forgiven and may he rest in peace.
