Viola Scribner and Johnston Maxwell Text submitted by Thomas Lee Scribner Records indicate that William Scribner,
Charles father, was born on April 29, 1821, in Liberty Township, Delaware
County, Ohio. William married Susan Sophia Newberry some time around
1847, and had 8 children. Their names were Wallace, George, Viola, Minerva,
John, Thomas Harvey, Charles, and Jacob.
Viola was born on August 3, 1852. Viola married Johnston
Maxwell on December 19, 1869. Johnston was born in Ohio, and came from a
large and prominent family from West Virginia. Johnston and his father,
Marshall Maxwell, had a reputation for raising fine horses of exceptional
quality. Johnston had three children from a previous marriage. Having no
children of their own, it appears that Viola raised Johnston's children, the
oldest being seven at the time of their marriage. This seems evident in a
photo that I have marked with the inscription " Thanksgiving 1900", that
pictures all of them together. Thanksgiving 1900: This photo was sent to Thomas Harvey Scribner by his sister Viola. The photo was taken in 1900 in Cardington, Morrow County, Ohio. Viola married a man named Johnston Maxwell. They were known for raising horses of exceptional quality. Viola was "recognized as a cultured and
refined lady, who, by her many excellencies, has gained a wide circle of
friends. She belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church, and has long been an
active worker in church and Sunday-school, doing effective service in the
cause of Christianity" . |
